Information and advice for people affected by dilated cardiomyopathy

For many affected individuals, dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) is a condition which will not limit the quality or duration of life. Some people, however, experience significant symptoms and there is sometimes a risk of sudden death. Evaluation by a cardiologist is recommended to confirm the diagnosis and to assess the outlook and particularly the risk of complications.

A dilated cardiomyopathy booklet is available for anyone interested in learning more about the condition. It seeks to answer many of the questions and concerns of patients and their relatives.

Medical terms which describe the condition, and which might be encountered in conversations with doctors, are included and explained in the text. In addition, words in italics are explained in a glossary at bottom of the page. The Cardiomyopathy Association encourages comments to improve the information it supplies.
