The first international medical conference on a genetic disorder that can lead to dilated cardiomyopathy is being held in May.
The Ciliopathy Alliance is organising a conference entitled Cilia in Development and Disease at the Institute of Child Health in London from May 16th – 18th.
Ciliopathy concerns defects in the function or structure of cilia – the small, hair like protuberances to be found on the surface of virtually every cell in the human body.
Defects in the cilia can lead to a number of life-threatening diseases including Alstrom syndrome. Four in ten patients with Alstrom syndrome also have dilated cardiomyopathy.
The conference starts with a welcome and VIP reception on May 16th and a continues with scientific sessions on May 17th and 18th where renowned scientists and clinicians will present their latest research and best practice on this new area of human biology.
The sessions will look at the clinical aspects of ciliopathies, structure and funtion of cilia, cilia and development, cilia and disease and translational therapy and ciliotherapeutics.
The Ciliopathy Alliance brings together patient support groups, researchers, doctors and allied health professionals representing patients and families living with the conditions. Its aim is to improve the lives of children and adults affected by the syndromes, diseases and conditions caused by dysfunctional or defective cilia.
