Mick and Eugene raise awareness in Asda

Mick and Eugene raise awareness in Asda

Mick Reed (pictured right) and his nine-year-old grandson Eugene (pictured above) have been raising awareness of cardiomyopathy in their local Asda store.

The pair set up a stall with information about cardiomyopathy and the work of the CMA over a weekend at the end of March.

Mick’s Asda store in Kings Lynn also gave him a hamper to raffle-off and gift cards were also donated by his local Waitrose and Tesco stores and also both his local  Sainsbury’s’ stores.

He used these for prizes or to buy prizes for a tombola which with other donations raised just over £500.

Mick said: “Eugene was in charge of the tombola and he loved it.  The customers loved him and flocked to his table.”

Mick, who was diagnosed with dilated cardiomyopathy four years ago, said: “I have called the CMA nurses for advice and I have also talked to the medical director Robert Hall and they have always been so helpful.

"I became a CMA member and receive the magazine CMA News. I was very interested in people’s fund raising activities and thought I would like to give it a go.”

As well as encouraging good friend Andy Harrod to take part in the Grand East Anglia Run, and Eugene to take part in the junior event, Mick started started writing to local shops to see if he could raise awareness.

He said: “The day at Asda was a wonderful experience and we thoroughly enjoyed.  It was a great day with great people for a great charity.  Now I’m trying to do the same at other stores.”

Among the visitors to the Mick’s stall was a couple with two sons with the condition.  And they have since joined the CMA.

The Reeds were also helped by friend Sarah Roberts, who volunteered to help with her two children after reading about what Mick was doing on facebook.
