Two Cornwall police community support officers are cycling from John O’Groats in Scotland to Land’s End to raise money to help the fight against cardiomyopathy.
Sean McDonnell, aged 43, and Lewis Vague, 25, are cycling 900 miles in nine days in memory of Sean’s brother Wayne, who died from the heart muscle disease in 2000, aged 29. They hope to raise more than £5,000.
Sean, from Trevethan Road, Falmouth and Lewis, from Trewince Farm, Stithians, Truro, are stationed with the Devon and Cornwall Constabulary in Falmouth. They are both keen sportsmen but have only cycled short distances for pleasure before.
Wayne died suddenly from dilated cardiomyopathy, a condition that causes the heart muscle to enlarge and pump less strongly. It affects people of all ages, including babies and is the main reason for heart transplants.
Sean and Lewis set off on Tuesday (June 1st). Sean, who has also raised money for the charity for ten years through an annual football match between the force and the local prison service, said: “I have never cycled seriously until I started to train for this challenge six months ago.”
Lewis said: “It has been one of my life’s ambitions to do this cycle ride – especially as it is for a very worthwhile charity.”
Prison officers at Dartmoor Prison have already raised £600 from a golf day to help the pair achieve their target, and Falmouth Rugby Club is holding a charity disco evening while they are on the ride.
