Friends of Rebecca Sears took part in a new Just Walk fundraising event over the South Downs in West Sussex this summer.
The group was planning to do a Three Peaks Challenge but chose the less arduous 10km route when one of the party, Bry Hutsby, became pregnant.
Fellow walker Vanessa Gray said: “The walk went very well and we had a most wonderful day. We took our time because of Bry and enjoyed the sunshine and scenery. We would recommend the walk to anyone who wants to do something different for charity.
The group raised over £1,600 in memory of their friend Rebecca who died in January from dilated cardiomyopathy which had been diagnosed when she was 13. Most of the walkers were college friends of Rebecca’s.
They attended Moreton Morrell part of Warwickshire College with Rebecca, all taking courses relating to sports science and horses.
Vanessa said: “Rebecca has left a lasting memory on us and we wanted to do something to honour her’s." Vanessa added they were now hoping to do the Three Peaks Challenge next year, also in her memory.
Taking part with Vanessa and Bry were Nicky McCarthy, Jenny Harlow, Alix Robertson, Jonathon Freelove, Gina Suddaby, Chris Stuart and Lloyd Gravell.
Just Walk is for anyone wanting to fundraise for any charity and walkers can choose either 10km, 20km, 40km or 60km routes.
The Saturday walk was held in May.
