Capital gains tax does note apply to charitable gifts of shares. Donating shares, no matter how large or small, is a very tax efficient way to give to the Cardiomyopathy Association. This is because you receive two tax credits - a capital gains tax credit and an income tax credit at your marginal rate. With the capital gains tax credit, this means that you pay no capital gains tax, but the income tax credit can have a highly valuable impact.

For example, if you are a higher rate taxpayer and donate shares valued £1,000, you could claim up to £400 Income Tax relief as well as saving up to £400 in Capital Gains Tax. Discover the extra tax breaks available on gifts of shares.

In both cases evidence of the transaction needs to be provided to the revenue on the donor’s annual tax return before tax relief can be applied.

Other non-cash gifts

If you give land or personal assets such as works of art to charity, you'll be exempt from Capital Gains Tax on the value of the assets you give. You may also be able to claim a deduction of the value of the gift against your taxable income for gift of land.
