Heart pump without a power line?

Heart pump without a power line?

Two medical technology companies are working together to develop a heart pump that does not need a power line.

The left ventricular assist device (LVAD) would be powered by wireless transfer through the skin. Power lines are a major cause of infection, a serious complication for patients. So not having a power line would be of major benefit to patients.

Heartware, which manufactures small left ventricular assist devices (LVADs), is working with engineers at the medical technology company Dualis on producing a pump that uses a transcutaneous energy transfer system (TETS).

It would be designed to safely and efficiently provide power to patients during normal daily activities.

The companies say they have already demonstrated the feasibility of the technology and under the agreement

Heartware will fund a TETS development programme for left ventricular assist devices (LVADs).

Dr Thomas Schmid, from Dualis MedTech, said:  "We have already conducted over a dozen animal studies of our TETS technology, which gives us great confidence in the integrity of our system.  We look forward to a long and productive partnership with HeartWare as we pursue our mission of creating intelligent implants to treat poorly managed medical conditions. By coupling an external "sender" coil with an implanted "receiver" coil, the TETS system is able to transfer electricity through the patient's skin, thereby eliminating the traditional power and transmitter cable used in ventricular assist devices today.”

Heartware chief executive Doug Godshall said: “Through this relationship we can accelerate our development timeline, as well as take advantage of the technology upgrade we have seen through the integration of the two programmes."
